May I introduce you to ‘The Friends of English Bowling’. The Friends was set up in October 2005 with the object of providing sponsorship and sport development funds for the English Bowling Association, (now Bowls England).

Membership Secretary - EBA Past President John Austin at the National Championships, Worthing 2006

So why does Bowls England need additional funds? Bowls England is not in financial problems and has a healthy Bank Account, for example, it has made over £300,000 available to grass roots bowlers by way of loans to clubs and many more would like help in improving their facilities.

However Bowls is no different to any of the other minor sports in that it struggles to find major sponsorship. ‘The Friends’ is a vehicle whereby many people who have enjoyed the sport have an opportunity to put something back into the game. The Friends has, and intends to expand its role, in seeking out minor sponsorship. In other words small sponsors who would not be able to fund a major championship but could still, with others, provide the funds that can be used for major championship events or to help develop our sport.

Thus ‘The Friends’ have two kinds of members: Personal Membership Joining Fee of £100 and annual subscription of £100. and Corporate Membership for small companies.

Bowls England recognises ‘The Friends’ as a Major Sponsor and thus its members can enjoy the same privileges as other sponsors. In addition to being recognised as Sponsors members can enjoy playing in Friendship Matches.

A temporary committee to get the show on the road has been established and the first meeting of ‘The Friends’ was held on the 31st August 2006, when a Formal Constitution was agreed, and Officers and Committee membership established.

It is new, it is bold, and it is good for the sport of bowls.
